Replication and Realignment in CRM

Replication is a process of synchronizing data between two systems. Examples of these systems are SAP R/3 to SAP CRM and SAP CRM to mobile client. There are two types of replication -- bulk replication and intelligent replication. The message Bdocs uses bulk replication (ex: R/3 to CRM) and synchronization Bdocs uses intelligent replication (ex: SAP CRM to mobile client).
Meanwhile, realignment is redistribution of data between mySAP CRM and mobile clients based on subscriptions. This is to ensure the distributed databases (mobile client databases) remain consistent with the consolidated database (CDB).

The two types of realignment are called minor realignment and major realignment. Minor realignment is triggered by data changes (ex: change of a field value). Major realignment is triggered when there are changes to the mobile client subscriptions. In this case, creation or deletion of BDoc messages will be replicated to the mobile client based on the subscription changes.

Successful SAP CRM project implementation

1. SAP CRM project resource requirements could be very complex based on the functionality being implemented. The complexity multiplies if it is a global SAP CRM project because of legal and cultural requirements. You can count 50% success the moment you have staffed your project with the right resources.

Build a core team that would assist you in staffing the project as you don't have prior SAP CRM project implementation experience. This would prevent you ending up with fake experience resources if you depend on staffing firms. Alternatively, you can choose an implementation partner who has done project implementation similar to the project you are taking up. Negotiate a fixed bid contract with the implementation partner.

2. Identify the visible and hidden project sponsors and stake holders and understand what are they expect out of this project and try to set the expectations right.

3. CRM projects are business driven and IT assisted. You have to do political management to have balance between the key players especially if the implementation involves multiple business applications like marketing, sales and service.

4. Get the commitment and time from the business process owners and power users for a successful requirement gathering and implementation.

5. SAP CRM involves a steep learning curve. Identify your internal resources, training and education needs then have a training plan/education plan during the project preparation itself.

6. Set up a communication plan and road show if an intense change management is part of this project implementation. This will prepare the internal resources and employees to slowly admit the incoming changes to their job profiles and business processes.

7. Find out what the corporate team expectations are out of this project as Corporate Metrics. Make sure the metrics are part of the delivery on day one of go live.

8. Make sure your training plan, project plan, landscape plan, testing plan and deployment plans are in sync with your master plan. You should be alerted if any plan dates are out of sync with your master plan.

ASAP Methodology

Phase 1: Project Preparation :
During this phase the team goes through initial planning and preparation for SAP project.
Define project goals and objectives
Clarify the scope of implementation
Define project schedule, budget plan, and implementation sequence
Establish the project organization and relevant committees and assign resources

Phase 2: Business Blueprint
The purpose of this phase is to achieve a common understanding of how the company intends to run SAP to support their business. Also, to refine the original project goals and objectives and revise the overall project schedule in this phase. The result is the Business Blueprint, a detailed documentation of the results gathered during requirements workshops.

Phase 3: Realization:
The purpose of this phase is to implement all the business process requirements based on the Business Blueprint. The system configuration methodology is provided in two work packages: Baseline (major scope); and Final configuration (remaining scope). Other key focal areas of this phase are conducting integration tests and drawing up end user documentation.

Phase 4: Final Preparation:
The purpose of this phase is to complete the final preparation (including testing, end user training, system management and cutover activities) to finalize your readiness to go live. The Final Preparation phase also serves to resolve all critical open issues. On successful completion of this phase, you are ready to run your business in your live SAP System.

Phase 5: Go Live & Support:
The purpose of this phase is to move from a project-oriented, pre-production environment to live production operation. The most important elements include setting up production support, monitoring system transactions, and optimizing overall system performance.

Testing process in an SAP CRM implementation

Like any other project, implementing SAP CRM happens in phases.
The general phases are (ASAP Methodology)
1) Project planning
2) Blueprinting
3) Realization
4) Final preparation (Business validation, quality assurance (Q/A))
5) Go live and support

So the typical system landscape for SAP CRM, at the minimum, are:
1) Development system
2) Q/A system
3) Production system

Large and complex projects may have a sandbox system before the development system and a training system also:
1) Sandbox system
2) Development system
3a) Q/A system
3b) Training system
3c) Production system

The implementation team completes the construction of the application as per business requirements evolved in the blueprinting phase. Unit testing of application is done within the development system. Applications and programs that are successful after the unit testing will be transported to Q/A system. The business super users and key users will do the end-to-end integration testing of the applications. The results of such testing will then be documented in an issue tracking system with the issue number, issue, issue description, application, issue priority (critical, high, medium and low) created by, created date, responsible owner, resolved date. The responsible owner will be notified via email whenever an issue is recorded in the issue tracking system. The owner of the issue will look into the issue and update the issue with the solution, resolved date. The responsible owner transports the changes from development to the QA system and notifies the person who created the issue. The tester will test the application and either closes the issue or report if any further issues noticed.

This continues until the application is robust and "bug free" from both functional and technical aspects. The successful application will be transported from development to training system for end user training and finally to the production system.

Pay, Demand Soar for SAP-Skills

IT professionals with SAP skills have seen their salaries mount and demand soar for two years.

Salaries for SAP specializations increased 15.2 percent in 2006, according to research released in February by Foote Partners, a New Canaan, Conn., IT workforce research firm. Data from the first two quarters of 2007 suggests little abatement of this trend.

"Right now, anybody who is working in the SAP world, either with functional or technical skills, is doing great," said Jim Lanzalotto, vice president of strategy and marketing for Yoh, a recruiting and outsourcing firm, based in Philadelphia. "The demands are for specialized skills, and if you've got to pick the right market to be a specialist in, the world of SAP is hot."

ERP-related roles accounted for two of the best-paying IT jobs in the second quarter of 2007, according to the second quarter 2007 Yoh Index of Technology Wages, released July 23. SAP technical consultants came in first, with average hourly pay rates of $85.53, and ERP (enterprise resource planning) functional consultants came in eight dollars behind in second place, at $78.40 per hour.

"ERP consultants are the rock stars of the technology space. Companies that have these technologies in place are deeply wedded to them, and they want to get as much value out of them as possible," said Lanzalotto. "That is why having those specialists in place is critical."

But it wasn't just ERP-skilled pros that had an excellent quarter: the Yoh Index evidenced the IT job market at its second highest point since 2001. Wages for highly-skilled technology professionals surpassed pay rates from 2006, according to the report's data, recording the average hourly rate for all high-impact roles at $31.61 at the mid-point of the second quarter of 2007. This was only a slight dip from the first quarter's $31.80, the highest average wage recorded by the Index since 2001.

Lanzalotto argued that both strong wages in the face of widespread offshoring and a well-documented shortage of workers with the most sought-after skills, signal an especially healthy market.

"I think what the talent market is saying right now is that they know they're in control right now. The power is with the talent," said Lanzalotto.

Furthermore, though salaries may not be where they were in the 1990s, Lanzalotto believes their steadier growth this time has a better chance of being sustained for a period of economic growth.

"These are the good old days. The market is better than it was in the late 1990s because it's a rational market. The market was irrational back then. There was such ill-defined hiring and [methods of] putting projects in place. Now there's a defined need and they're looking for rock stars," said Lanzalotto.

Though ERP-related roles dominated the most highly-paid positions, large amounts of activity in the clinical research, product development and engineering space have also driven up salaries for those with the coveted skill sets.

"There are a couple major trends that apply. On the product development side, given that consumer demand is strong, companies are trying to build better mousetraps as fast as they can," said Lanzalotto. "The second piece, because specialization has become so strong and such a key part of the way the market is dividing, talent really has a chance to take advantage and do well with this."

Hardware designers had the third highest hourly wages in the second quarter, according to the report, at $65.63, followed by Project Managers at $58.65.

"Project management is unbelievably strong because with all the application development and infrastructure projects going on, the demand for it is powerful… And, if you're a project manager with CRM and application development experience, and maybe Java or ERP on top of it, the market is incredibly strong. I'd love to know the unemployment rate for this group is, because they must be beyond full employment," said Lanzalotto.

The fifth through 10th highest hourly pay rates were: database administrators ($57.36), java developers ($55.62), SAS programmers ($52.77), aerospace engineers ($49.98) and clinical research associates ($49.42).
